Alan Burgess grew up in ‘the land of song’ and read Music at Edinburgh University where he was a lay clerk at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. During his studies, Alan sung in a number of chamber choirs before embarking on his career as a music teacher. He worked at schools in Edinburgh, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire, where he taught for over forty years. Alan is Musical Director of Bradford on Avon Choral Society, Frome Voices and accompanist to Dolce Singers and Beckington Village Choir. He has previously held posts as Musical Director of The Athenauem Singers, Frome Youth Choir, Christ Church Singers, the first Frome Festival in 2001 and as an accompanist to Corsley Festival Choir.
Highlights include directing performances of Britten’s Noye’s Fludde and Frome Voices joining forces for a performance of Jenkins’ Symphonic Adiemus in Carnegie Hall. Alan retired from headship in 2015 and is in demand for piano teaching and accompanying alongside his roles as Church Warden at Christ Church, Frome, as a trustee of Jackdaws Music Education Trust and maintains ongoing links as a volunteer with Orangutan Foundation UK.​
